What is cultural responsiveness?

Our backgrounds and cultures often play a critical role in how we behave. Our cultural backgrounds may influence how we approach situations, solve problems, communicate, and provide our framework for what we view as “good” or “bad.”

In serving the dynamic needs of diverse communities, it is important to gain the awareness, knowledge, and skills to work with different cultures (i.e., cultural competence), to reflect on the ways that we interact and engage with those communities (e.g., cultural humility) and utilize these skills to effectively teach our learners and create environments conducive to success (i.e., cultural responsiveness).

This tool was adapted for use by ABA professionals to help explore cultural variables that may impact service delivery.
